The Milton & Tamar Maltz Performing Arts Center

The Milton & Tamar Maltz Performing Arts Center at The Temple – Tifereth Israel has become a place for music, lectures, and other forms of cultural enrichment. Anchored by Silver Hall, seating up to 1,200 people, it has become home to students from Case Western Reserve’s music department, whose 19 ensembles include a symphony orchestra, an Early Music vocal ensemble, Baroque chamber ensembles and orchestra, ensembles for jazz, wind, and popular music, and the Case Concert Choir.

The Maltz Performing Arts Center is also home to Think Forum, the university’s distinguished lecture series, and will host signature cultural programs that engage the larger Cleveland community. In addition, the facility will continue to be used by The Temple's congregation for major religious observances and life-cycle events.

As part of a historic partnership between Case Western Reserve University and The Temple – Tifereth Israel, this completely restored facility has become a prized jewel within Cleveland’s University Circle neighborhood, regarded by many as the cultural epicenter of Northeast Ohio.

A Historic Past. A Shining Future.
Working closely with Connecticut based Akustiks and Case Western Reserve University, SoundCom was selected by to deploy the Phase One audio and video systems in this gloriously restored historic venue.

Silver Hall, the primary auditorium with a seating capacity of 1,200, has a unique heptagonal shape and is capped with a massive gold dome which represented incredible challenges acoustically and visually for the entire construction team.

To effectively address the sound reinforcement needs in the hall, while preserving the visual integrity of the venue, SoundCom installed d&b audiotechnik xC series mechanically steerable line array speaker columns carefully installed and custom color matched to virtually blend in to the historic stone structure. These arrays were augmented with additional delay zone speakers and powerful subwoofers to create a concert-grade experience.

For more demanding concert requirements, a complete Martin MLA series portable ground stack system was provided driving higher decibel levels throughout the venue.

The entire stage was rebuilt and features unique and custom floor boxes with a wide range of connectivity and capabilities to support nearly any type of performance.

The systems are unique in that they are designed to be incredibly flexible to handle any level event and any level system operator. The venue can be used and operated from virtually anywhere with custom control systems built for a wide range of users.

A Yamaha CL and DM series digital mixing consoles with supporting equipment were provided in portable road cases for easy setup and tear down at different mixing positions throughout the venue.

The consoles work in concert with a state of the art recording system which includes 12 microphones integrated into the custom 15-ton glass and steel canopy. Each microphone utilizes custom ServoReelers and can lower to any height off the stage with the simple press of a button.

A complete Avid ProTools audio recording and post editing system was deployed. ATC nearfield reference monitors and a full suite of recording microphones from Schoeps, AKG, Sennheiser, and Shure round out the recording capabilities of this world-class venue.

Not to be outdone by audio, the venue features impressive video capabilities featuring a Digital Projection 11,000 lumens 3-chip DLP Laser projector throwing crystal clear images from over 80’ away onto a massive custom Vutec ground lifted projection screen system.

A complete broadcast video production system and infrastructure was installed featuring five Telemetric broadcast grade robotic cameras all feeding a Snell Advanced Media SDI matrix router. A Grass Valley GV Director production switcher was deployed for easy production of broadcast events.

A full broadcast wiring infrastructure including fiber, triax, and SDI connections are provided throughout the facility to accommodate outside television production trucks when needed.

In addition to the systems in Silver Hall, a complete sound and video system was also installed in the restored recital hall. The hall features dual Christie digital projectors on motorized lifts, SLS column speakers, wireless and wired microphones, a complete audio recording system and tie-ins with Silver Hall.
